Garden with fruit (after Charles Ethan Porter) reconsiders the watermelon as a contested object shaped by histories of Black labor, freedom, pleasure, and racist representation. Responding to Charles Ehan Porter’s Untitled (Cracked Watermelon), the artist places the fruit inside a constructed cardboard environment, where the “box” evokes the constraints of stereotype and the limits imposed by representation. Behind it, a photographed garden offers another possibility: a metaphorical space of growth. This work was collected by The Studio Museum in Harlem and is featured in an interview with the artist on the Studio Musseum in Harlem Magazine.
