The Fruits of Amalgamation (Miscegination) stages a collision between slavery, racial fantasy, sexual desire, sexual violence, and the making of whiteness against Blackness. A reproduction of a painting of a slave market sits underneath fragments of language and popular culture, linking the commodififcation of Black bodies to the anxities and desires surrounding interracial intimacy. The partially erased page turns the archive into a contested surface, exposing how race has been written and made to appear natural. The work treats “miscegination” as a political category produced through property, power, reproduction, and the policing of racial boundaries.
